How did hieroglyphs disappear?
We Egyptians notice that there is a rupture between us and our ancestors, the Pharaohs, in terms of many things, including language and hieroglyphic culture.
Before talking about how the hieroglyphs disappeared, dear reader, you must know what the hieroglyphs are.
⬅️ Writing was discovered in general in 3350 BC. Before its discovery, it was called prehistoric times, that is, before man knew how to read and write. The hieroglyphic consists of two syllables: “Hero” meaning inscription and “Glyph” meaning sacred, which are inscriptions, shapes and images that the ancient Egyptian derived from nature It was used as an official writing style to record events and religious texts on temples, tombs, statues, and stone slabs.
The biggest reason for the rupture was the weakness of the Egyptian rulers and the collapse of their empire, which lasted for nearly three thousand years, which led to the arrival of invaders from all sides and towards the desert, and the work of the invaders to keep the Egyptians away from their history and glories for fear of their awakening, and kept them away from leadership, governance and soldiers, leaving them as slaves to the land who farm, produce and finance the invaders and their invaders. And they pay taxes and tribute only, and as a result, the language fell on their tongues, and their bodies waned.
The real estrangement began since the advent of Julius Caesar and the burning of his Alexandria Library, which was the beacon of knowledge, which contained 700 thousand volumes and records bearing the history of Egypt, the most important of them being the history of Manetho.
In the fourth century BC, Christianity became the official religion of the Byzantine Empire, so Emperor Neodosius ordered the closure of all pagan temples. By tradition, and also the Roman Emperor Justinian, with his support with the Christians of Egypt, closed the Temple of Isis in Philae, the last stronghold of the hieroglyphs (the last hieroglyphic text was on the island of Philae in 393 AD) and its priests in Egypt, and thus the complex of the Pharaonic gods became illegal and the hieroglyphic died with the death of the last of its priests.
By the year 450 AD, all traces and holdings of science and knowledge had completely disappeared
▫️ That estrangement continued and even expanded with the dawn of the Muslim conquerors, the embrace of Islam and the conversation in the Arabic language after several languages, from the hieroglyphic to the Coptic, and all the Pharaonic civilization was forgotten until the European colonists landed at the end of the 18th century and worked to spread their language, but it did not expand.
And chance alone brought the Rosetta Stone into existence, so Champollion was guided to decipher the talismans of the ancient Egyptian language.
